I’ve got my hands on some photos from New York City ‘s annual light installation in memory of the victims of the September 11 attacks.
The installation is called Tribute in Light and consists of 88 spotlights located on the roof of a parking house half a mile from where the Twins stood and where the new WTC now stands.
The light twins burn about $1900 worth of electricity in 24 hours. Each of the towers uses about 8,000 watts of power.
The floodlights are turned on a few minutes before sunset. The sun is not yet completely hidden behind the horizon, but it is already hidden behind Manhattan.
And this is after sunset. Not every year there are clouds in the sky on this day, this year was lucky.
It would be nice if the installation worked all year round. Then the light poles could be used as a guiding landmark, as a beacon, as a polar star. The projectors are very powerful and the light can be seen from far away.
This year an old pier was opened in the park by the river – after restoration there are basketball courts, are there many places on the planet where you can play basketball with such a view? Also on the pier there is a rocker, an ice rink for roller skates in summer and ice skates in winter, squash courts and just a meadow with grass where you can lie around.
And this is the pier next door. It was renovated a couple of years ago and is now a soccer stadium.
On the right is the new WTC tower, which is where the Twins used to stand.
Also this year, they opened a beach here. You can not swim there – the water is still not clean, plus a very strong current.
Like the first three photos in this post, this one continues the tradition of window views.

And this is what those light towers looked like last year. You can see some more pictures in the post Nighttime New York . This post is also available in:
